Extensions Explained: Which Type Is Right for You?

Your Above All Guide to Gorgeous, Full-Bodied Hair

Dreaming of longer, fuller, or more voluminous hair? Hair extensions are one of the most transformative services we offer — but we get it, the options can feel overwhelming! Whether you’re looking for length, volume, or a fun way to experiment without long-term commitment, there’s a perfect extension solution for every hair type and lifestyle.

At Above All Grand Salon & Spa, we’re here to help you understand the pros, cons, and differences between the most popular extension methods — and find the one that fits you best.

Why Get Hair Extensions?

Extensions aren’t just for red carpet glam. They can add fullness to thinning areas, help you grow out a bad cut, or give your look a whole new vibe for an event or season. With the right match and stylist, they look completely natural — and they’re easier to maintain than you might think!

Types of Hair Extensions We Offer

Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of extensions and what makes them unique:

1. Tape-In Extensions

Best for: Medium to thick hair but can also be a good fit for some thinner hair candidates

Wear Time: 6–8 weeks before re-taping

Tape-ins are pre-taped hair wefts (1.5-2” in width) that your stylist sandwiches around small sections of your natural hair. They’re lightweight, quick to install, and lay flat — perfect for adding volume or length without a long appointment. If the hair is in good shape it can normally be reused when re-taping.

âś… Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Reusable
  • Natural-looking finish

⚠️ Considerations:

  • Not ideal for super-fine hair

2. Beaded Rows (Also known as Hand-Tied Wefts & Sew Ins)

Best for: Medium to thick hair types but can also be a good fit for some thinner hair candidates

Wear Time: 5-6 weeks for bead clean up and 10 weeks for full removal and reinstallation

This semi-permanent method involves sewing hand-tied wefts onto a row of beads anchored to your natural hair. Great for seamless blending and maximum comfort, hand-tied wefts are one of our most popular and long-lasting options.

âś… Pros:

  • Ultra natural appearance
  • No tape or glue
  • Lightweight and flexible

⚠️ Considerations:

  • Installation takes longer
  • Needs proper brushing and washing technique

3. Keratin Bond (Fusion) Extensions (Also known as Ktips)

Best for: Almost all hair types

Wear Time: 4-6 months before removal depending on your care

Fusion extensions are applied strand-by-strand using a heat tool to bond keratin tips to your hair. This is a more permanent option with tons of flexibility in styling.

âś… Pros:

  • Long-lasting
  • Invisible bonds
  • Allows for high ponytails and updos

⚠️ Considerations:

  • Takes several hours to install
  • Not reusable
  • Higher price point

4. I-Tip Extensions

Best for: All hair types

Wear Time: 6–10 weeks before needing maintenance

I-tip extensions are similar to keratin (K-tip) bonds, but instead of heat, they use a small bead to attach each strand to your natural hair. The bead is clamped to hold the extension securely in place, making this a heat-free option that still offers strand-by-strand customization. Hair can sometimes be reused if it’s kept in good condition.

âś… Pros:

  • No heat or glue required
  • Natural movement and flexibility
  • Individual strand placement for custom volume and shape
  • Can be reused if maintained well

⚠️ Considerations:

  • Requires regular maintenance every 6–10 weeks
  • May slip if not cared for properly
  • Slightly visible beads if hair is very fine

5. Clip-In Extensions

Best for: Occasional wear or special events

Wear Time: Daily wear and removal

These are the OG temporary option — simply clip them in when you want a little boost! Available in multiple lengths and shades, they’re a fun and low-commitment way to level up your look.

âś… Pros:

  • Great for beginners
  • No damage to natural hair
  • Perfect for weddings, photoshoots, or nights out

⚠️ Considerations:

  • Not ideal for everyday wear
  • Must be removed before sleeping
